Burlotto Barolo Cannubi 2012

“The 2012 Barolo Cannubi is a little bit darker than Burlotto’s Verduno Barolos, with all of the striking mid-palate silkiness and creaminess that is such a signature of Cannubi. Beguiling and totally seamless, the 2012 feels like velvet on the palate. The exquisitely layered, seamless finish is a thing of beauty. Burlottos’ Cannubi doesn’t get a lot of play, perhaps because it was made in a more modern style up until a few years ago, but it has all the pedigree of the better known wines in this range. The 2012 is superb.”

“I think if you’re in a bit of a rush when tasting, you could miss a lot of the good things about these 2012s. Fine boned. They take their own good time to reveal themselves, and from a small subset thus far, they seem to flesh out well given a good airing. Comm. G.B. Burlotto have their Cannubi holdings in the Valletta part of Cannubi, though they choose to label it simply ‘Cannubi’, because that’s allowed too.

Red fruits and roses with sweet spices and maybe a whisper of liquorice and tar. Medium bodied at most, clean and fresh, very light on its feet, so light you could be fooled into thinking it’s floating around a bit too much, but swish it firmly and the almost silky tannin grips like a wet chamois, then it’s fresh and strawberried on a precise finish of fine length. It’s pretty and it’s a lovely expression of Barolo. One for those who admire finesse.”
