Blank Canvas Gruner Veltliner 2013

“Founded in 2013, this is one of the most exciting labels to emerge from Marlborough in the past decade, established by Marlborough-based international wine consultant Matt Thomson and his wife Sophie Parker-Thomson. The influence of Thomson’s yearly trips to make wine in Europe is reflected in the restraint and elegance of the wines. This is natural winemaking without the faults: cloudy juice, wild fermentation, no filtration, etc.”
Rebecca Gibb MW, Making the Case for New Zealand Reds (Mar 2021)

“Now this really does have Grüner Veltliner written all over it even though the vines are still pretty young (this is the fourth harvest). It is certainly peppery but it also has the oily (in a good way) depth that I have only ever seen in the Wachau. There’s some citrus and green fruit too but also a mineral, dry texture. Well balanced and remarkably full-bodied given the moderate alcohol. Still incredibly fresh but starting to show the complexity of some bottle age. I look forward to tasting it again.”
94-95 POINTS JULIA HARDING MW,  jancisrobinson.com

“What a fascinating wine. Grüner Veltliner is normally drunk fresh and lively at about a year old. This is 8 years old and oak-aged! It’s a scintillating green-gold colour and reeks of lime zest splashed with petrol and rock rubbed with honey. Powerful, pithy, acid yet rich, fruity yet stoney dry. Fascinating stuff.”
